Transition technologies: closer steps towards lower energy consumption and GHG emissions in the metallurgical industry - FeNi case

Sustainability pushes technological adaptations in the metallurgical industry in order to diminish energy consumption and GHG emission. In this webinar, a FeNi production, where a transition technology consisting of selective reduction assisted by magnetic separation (SR-MS) is presented, which is able to be adapted to the RKEF conventional process. Experimental work accompanied by computational thermodynamics indicates that the proposed SR-MS method is able to concentrate Ni from less than 1% in the ore to almost 4% in the calcine, simultaneously diminishing CO2e emissions from 138.82 to 34 kg CO2/kg Ni, with further positive impact on a reduction of ~70% energy consumption during smelting.

Thermo-Calc Software’s Sustainability Webinar Series

This webinar is a part of the Thermo-Calc Sustainability Webinar Series, which features four presentations demonstrating practical ways Thermo-Calc products can support sustainability goals in key areas: sustainable processing and emissions reduction, aluminum recycling, and sustainable alloy development.

The series runs from November 2025 to December 2025 and includes four webinars in total: two by Thermo-Calc Solutions AB, and two featuring Thermo-Calc users sharing sustainability applications. Join us to learn, explore, and see how Thermo-Calc tools and services can support your sustainability initiatives.
