Guest on Video Podcast: Everyday Metallurgy

Crash Course on Thermo-Calc

In this two-part series, Nicholas Grundy, Metallurgist at Thermo-Calc Software, was invited as a guest on Peter Kjeldsteen's podcast Everyday Metallurgy, for a crash course in Thermo-Calc!

In Part 1 of a two-part series, the focus is on a highly alloyed tool steel in its liquid phase, where thermodynamics are close to equilibrium. The discussion centers around the formation and control of the alloy’s solidus and liquidus as a function of the protective atmosphere.

In Part 2 of the Everyday Metallurgy crash course, the focus shifts to alloy systems that have not yet reached equilibrium. Nicholas demonstrates how Thermo-Calc’s kinetic simulation module, DICTRA, can be used to model diffusion and phase transformations over time, providing valuable insights beyond equilibrium thermodynamics.

Tune in to hear Nicholas and Peter dive into the world of thermodynamic simulations and gain insights into how Thermo-Calc can be applied to real-world metallurgical challenges.
